What started as a Sunday brunch project at High Cotton has grown into one of Charleston's most beloved live acts. The Spare Kings bring together three musicians whose combined resumes read like a who's-who of the Southeast music scene. Jeff Kozelski (vocals, guitars) is a Charleston City Paper-profiled artist with two solo LPs and over two decades of performing across the region — from touring with King Hippo and The Outervention to collaborating with Darius Rucker and members of Band of Horses. Stephen Jenkins (keyboards, vocals, acoustic guitar) is a New Bern, North Carolina native who relocated to Charleston after playing with Raleigh-based Traces of Morrow, bringing jazz piano chops and singer-songwriter sensibility to the mix. Fuller Condon (upright bass, vocals) is a Columbia University-trained music major and one half of The Two Man Gentlemen Band — the vaudeville-jazz duo that opened for Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, toured the US and Europe, and wrote the theme song for Disney's animated series Wander Over Yonder. Described as "local legends" by their home venue The Establishment on Broad Street, where they hold a regular Saturday night residency, Spare Kings blend piano jazz, blues, classic soul, and roots with world influences. Their performances feature three-part harmonies, tambourine-on-shoe rhythms, and hits spanning the 1950s through today — all delivered with a loose, joyful energy that makes every show feel like a party. With plans to record extensively, the trio also performs benefit concerts including a scholarship fundraiser at the Craven Arts Council in New Bern covered by WNCT News.
